If you’re a registered Landshare Canada user you can set up your own group within the site. These groups allow you to get together with people who are landsharing in your area, or who have the same interests or are part of the same organisation as you.
There are two types of groups: General groups and Organisations. Read on to decide which group is best for you, see what features are available, and find out how to get the most out of your Landshare group.
Which type of group is best for you?
You can set up any kind of group on Landshare Canada. This guide will help you to decide which type is most suitable for you.
General groups
A general group (sometimes simply called ‘group’) is great for active landsharers and those with specialist interests. A general group is a simple way to get together with other landsharers in your local area to swap local advice and information, post details of events in your area, and arrange to meet up with like-minded growers to swap stories, seeds and, of course, food.
You can also use groups to connect with landsharers who have the same interests as you. You can set up a group for school-based landsharers or bee-keepers, or a group for veg doctors.

Organisations
The organizations functionality is designed for existing organisations to tell the Landshare Canada community about their work, and to communicate directly with their audience and members.
You can choose whether to set your organisation as open for anyone to join, so that you can spread your message as widely as possible and let landsharers know about your organisation’s news and events. Alternatively, set your group as invite-only and use it to collaborate with your organisation’s members.

Features of General groups and Organisations
General groups and organizations have many of the same features. With either type of group you can:
− Collate related listings in one place, even if they’re owned by different users
− Chat with your members in your own forum
− Invite new members, and manage your list of members
− Maintain a group blog, which any admin can add to
− Post details of events, and invite your members
− Choose your settings, such as whether to have your group open or invite-only
− Select who will have admin privileges for your group
− Link to other groups and organizations− Link to an external website
− Have your own unique url eg, landsharecanada.com/groups/calgarygrowers
− Send messages to your members
How to get the most out of your Group
With any kind of Landshare group, the Landshare Canada community will be able to view your group and, if it’s an open group or organisation, join it. But there’s a lot that you can do to attract members to your group.
You can search the listings to find suitable members for your group. If your group is a collective of local landsharers, try searching by postal code to find the people near you. If you’re an organisation or want to find people with a similar specialism, a keyword search might be the best way to find the right people.
Once you know who you’d like to invite to your group, you can click the invite button within your general group or organisation to ask them to join you.
Once your general group or organisation is established, keep your members engaged with plenty of chat in your forum, and by inviting them to your events.
A regular blog will keep your members up to date, and will also appear in the general blogs section of the Landshare Canada site, helping to raise your profile amongst the Landshare Canada community and draw even more people to your group or organisation.
