12 x 20 ft old grown in garden space, crying to be rescued and planted. Good light, south east facing. Open to suggestions on what to plant, basic vegetable or herbs, perhaps suitable for flowes. Located just off memorial drive in Parkdale, NW Calgary. Easy access and close to inner city

I have a backyard of about 45'x45'. It's a west-facing yard, with lots of southern exposure. It has been entirely pesticide-free for at least the 7 years that I have owned the land. In recent years, I've struggled to keep the weeds in check. There are dandelions, purple bellflowers, and likely many thriving plants that I don't even recognize as weeds. There's also a small forest that sprang up a couple of years ago. No idea what those trees/shrubs might be. In short, the plot needs a lot of TLC to be reclaimed from the wilderness it is becoming. Up for the challenge?

Spring is in the air Calgary style, and it's time to start planting - how exciting... I am lucky enough to have a large, sunny yard in the vicinity of Peter's Drive-In. I have 2 spots people can use... Firstly, I would like to develop the south-facing front yard and explore the option of getting rid of the lawn altogether and doing a combo flower/shrub garden with some edibles mixed in. In the back there is lots of sun too, as the yard is large enough to get east, south, and west exposure. Here I have thought about allowing someone to build raised beds for edibles, and perhaps even a greenhouse. I am open to possibilities. And as a big lover of bees, I welcome beekeepers to this garden. You must be dog-loving (I have a small and friendly dog named Mister).... too small to get into raised beds :0) Open to dialogue.... We live in the Eau Claire Market area of downtown and because we live on the river...I've been told that Ft. Calgary back in the day, could grow corn for the troops due to the river valley climate. Amazing! My husband and I spent a considerable sum of money in the past 10 years creating 3 large raised beds....all with organic soil and also have 3 other garden spaces plus several large containers that we have successfully grown potatoes in for some years and some medium sized pots, also the ability to hang tomato bags from a west facing fence. We now have a 2 year old which doesn't leave a lot of time for gardening, but do not want to abandon the potential of what we have created and been using with bio-dynamic methods. In one year, we had 17 different species in the garden! I'm wondering if you are interested in using this space, and how it would work...as we would still want to do a limited amount of tending the garden and using some of the produce. We also have an on-site composter which you are welcome to use...or take the soil away for other purposes. Our garden also benefits from being above a heated garage so that the season starts earlier and ends later for us due to the extra heat it gets. You'd also have the benefit of serving some REALLY local clients. We can see the River Cafe from our backyard and can also see Prego, upscale Italian in Eau Claire Mall and there is the Good Earth Cafe which might want some of the produce. Perhaps the Eau Claire Sheraton hotel restaurant would also be interested in some of the produce? 1 raised bed is East facing. 1 raised bed is south facing. Fence is west facing. 1 raised bed is West facing. 3 garden areas as well. Pots can be moved around too.
